VLN, BritCar and Nurburgring 24 hours

3 Jun 2013

Taunton businessman and professional race driver Adam Sharpe led the Green Recycling race team to a storming win in their latest VLN race at the Nurburgring against a strong opposition line-up. Adam put the car on pole during qualifying and took the first stint of the 4 hour race to put the car into a healthy lead. Co-driver Rob Smith finished the job in the second stint with a nip-and-tuck last two laps and the team took the win and secured the lead in the prestigious championship. "It was a great result for the team" said Adam "and I'm delighted for my sponsors Notaro Homes, ICUK.net and Cardstream, whose continued support I greatly appreciate."

Last weekend's 3 hour Britcar championship race at Rockingham saw Sharpe put the Millard team Rapier on pole for the race and take a fastest lap and the Sunoco Driver of the Weekend on the way to a team podium second. "Fuel pressure issues dented our chances of a win" reported Sharpe "but the Rapier worked well otherwise and is a real match for the well-funded Aston Martin GT3 that took the win". Sharpe's pole in qualifying ahead of some expensive machinery such as the latest Aston Martin GT3 and 7.0 litre Mosler GT3 followed some intensive work with the team, dialling in the car to meet the unusual demands of the Rockingham circuit. "It's great to be back in a prototype" enthused a delighted Sharpe. "It's been a while since the Courage and Zytek LMP2 prototype drives at Le Mans".

Although Adam put the Green Recycling BMW on the front row of the class grid for the recent Nurburgring 24 hour spectacular, alongside another 200 cars, 700 drivers and in front of 250,000 spectators, the race outing was to be short-lived. A McLaren blew its engine and dropped an oil slick directly in front of co-driver Rob Smith, who couldn't slow the car in time before hitting the barriers! The car was damaged massively and took over an hour to recover. With the team working all night to fix the car, it was finally withdrawn at 7:30am the following day when the team ran out of engineering options. "We're disappointed but keener than ever to get back out to the Nurburgring on 22 June to push for another VLN race win and more Championship points" reported Adam.
